I really wanted to see Avatar in Dolby 3D, not the RealD or Imax 3D systems, largely because I had heard the Dolby 3D system had less loss of screen brightness, less ghosting, and was all around a smoother experience. I'm glad I tracked down a theater that was using it (Regal Theaters at L.A. Live, if you're wondering) because it was well worth it.

So J.J. Abrams, after having given us Felicity, Alias, Lost, Cloverfield, and diving into the Star Trek world with promises to 're-imagine' the franchise, is also executive producing (as well as screenwriting and composing the theme for) a new Fox series called Fringe, along with his frequent collaborators Robert Orci and Alex Kurzman. Since I've very recently given up on Bones, which started its leisurely journey over the shark in last season's finale and has thoroughly chummed the waters with the first four episodes this year), I decided to see if Fringe could make up for Abrams' screenplay for Armageddon. So far, things look good. |

The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction gave away free review copies to the first twenty people who asked and said they’d write about it. I asked, I got it (and thank you!), I’m writing about it. 1) I was very glad to see that F&SF was sending out these free review copies to average people. Jason Stoddard and I are always yelling that the best way to market good products is to give free samples to loudmouths and encourage them to talk things up. F&SF’s target audience is packed with loudmouths, so they just have to find ‘em and let ‘em go to town. I hope they’ll start pushing copies on io9, SFSignal, and maybe shove a few at Wil Wheaton and John Scalzi. |

One of the great things about my recent life has been my involvement with the Fictionados, an L.A. writer's group/critique circle. There are some extraordinary writers in the group, and it's the type of group that's unflaggingly supportive while being brutally honest. Unlike some groups I've flirted with that end up giving each other pats on the back, which is great ego-boo, but doesn't really help you get to that next level, the Fictionados pull no punches in critique, and I can expect a completely honest critique that will let me know where I've fallen off the track and where I've got it right. Sometimes it feels like I'm more often in the former place, but it's getting better. |

Word has reached us that Thomas Disch made the decision to leave this world on Independence Day. His last several years had been troubled, ever since the death of his long-time partner, Charles Naylor. I'm sure that there will be a lot of words written about him over the next few weeks and my pitiful few won't be anywhere near what he deserves |
