Like many people, I find my daily commute seriously cuts into my reading time. While I've seen more than my share of L.A. commuters driving with a book balanced on the steering wheel, I have no wish to be a part of what seems the inevitable result of that choice. So I've been listening to a lot of unabridged audio books. With close to 80 miles round trip every day, that's about two unabridged books a month. It's a great way to stay current on recent releases, both fiction and non-fiction, and I'll be reviewing what I've been reading/listening to here. I'm going to begin with a 2009 cyber-thriller by Daniel Suarez, Daemon.

British fantasy writer Adrian Tchaikovsky has created a very deep world in Empire in Black and Gold, the first novel in his Shadows of the Apt series. Striding the line between high fantasy and steampunk sf, he carefully builds a society equal parts politics, emerging technology, and leftover ancestral magic. Drawing on classic fantasy themes – quest, growth, old ways versus new – and throwing in more modern themes of class and ethnic conflict, Tchaikovsky creates a complex web of character and action that pulls you relentlessly to the end.

I really wanted to see Avatar in Dolby 3D, not the RealD or Imax 3D systems, largely because I had heard the Dolby 3D system had less loss of screen brightness, less ghosting, and was all around a smoother experience. I'm glad I tracked down a theater that was using it (Regal Theaters at L.A. Live, if you're wondering) because it was well worth it.

First off, apologies for having had to moderate guest comments. Just too many spambots out there. If you want to comment without waiting for moderation, you'll have to register. Because of said spambots, registration is on a moderated basis. Hey, the internet is still the Wild West, and the spam contingent is like that nasty crowd of gunmen who try and take over the town, then the sheriff has to get over the saloon singer that broke his heart, sober up, and get down to business - with a particle beam weapon his great-great-grandson brought him by time machine.

Secondly, we're working hard to refresh content here far more regularly after an extended period of having not done so due to life just plain getting in the way. You'll notice the new review of Adrian Tchaikovsky's Empire in Black and Gold up this week, and there are more reviews cued up, including Dragonfly Falling (the sequel to Empire in Black and Gold), a revised look at Fringe now that there are almost two seasons of episodes, reviews of Daniel Suarez' pair of cyber-thrillers, Daemon and Freedom(TM), and, as they say in the teaser biz, much, much more.

So J.J. Abrams, after having given us Felicity, Alias, Lost, Cloverfield, and diving into the Star Trek world with promises to 're-imagine' the franchise, is also executive producing (as well as screenwriting and composing the theme for) a new Fox series called Fringe, along with his frequent collaborators Robert Orci and Alex Kurzman. Since I've very recently given up on Bones, which started its leisurely journey over the shark in last season's finale and has thoroughly chummed the waters with the first four episodes this year), I decided to see if Fringe could make up for Abrams' screenplay for Armageddon. So far, things look  good.
